There’s nothing quite like the excitement of finding the dress for your special day, whether you’re the bride or the mother of the bride.

But even the most exquisite gown isn’t truly perfect until it fits you like a dream, and that’s exactly where expert alterations come in.

As someone who’s spent nearly two decades perfecting the art of couture fitting, I want to demystify the process and share what really matters when it comes to making your dress uniquely yours.

Why Alterations Matter

Alterations are the secret ingredient that ensures a flawless fit. Off-the-rack dresses are made to standard sizes, but every body is unique, so it’s almost always necessary to make a few expert adjustments.

Whether it’s refining the bodice, adjusting the hem for your shoes, or tweaking the straps, these thoughtful changes are what transform a beautiful dress into one that feels truly yours.

Even small differences in posture or undergarment choice can affect how a dress sits, so a little tailoring goes a long way in making sure you look and feel your very best on the day.

The Fitting Journey: What to Expect

  1. The First Fitting: Foundation for Perfection -This is where we assess the overall fit and discuss your vision. I’ll pin and mark areas for adjustment, ensuring your comfort and confidence are front and centre.

  2. The Second Fitting: Refining the Details - At this stage, major adjustments are complete. We focus on checking the fit, the hem, and how the dress moves with you.

  3. The Third Fitting (and Beyond): Final Touches - This is all about those finishing flourishes, and making sure every aspect of your gown fits like a dream.

Pro tip:

Most custom pieces require at least four to six fittings for that couture finish. Don’t worry, each appointment is a chance to refine your gown so it’s truly yours.

Common Alterations Explained

  1. Bodice Adjustments: Ensuring a secure, flattering fit through the bust and waist (the most requested alteration for bridal gowns).

  2. Hems: Achieving the perfect length for your shoes and ease of movement.

  3. Straps & Sleeves: Adjusting for comfort and style.

  4. Bustles: For wedding gowns with trains, creating a bustle lets you dance the night away.

What to Bring to Every Fitting

  1. The shoes you’ll wear on the day.

  2. Your chosen undergarments (including shape wear, if any)

  3. Any accessories or veils you want to see with your dress

These little details make all the difference in achieving a seamless fit.

FAQs: Your Top Alterations Questions, Answered

Q: How far in advance should I schedule my first fitting?

For bridal gowns, I recommend starting fittings 3 to 6 months before your wedding. For special occasion dresses, 2 to 4 months is ideal.

Q: What if I lose or gain weight during the process?

Minor changes are normal and can be accommodated, just keep me updated so we can plan accordingly.

Q: Are alterations included in the cost of my gown?

For custom pieces, fittings are part of the process. For alterations to existing gowns, I provide a clear quote up front.
